Welcome to 1st Grade

It has been a while since I attended first grade...ok, it's been a REALLY long time. I still don't remember having much, if any, homework at that age. Have I just blocked it out?  I am not complaining. I love that my kids are challenged and they are, in fact, learning. I'm so amazed! If you have 1st grade ahead of you and your child, here's an example of what I'm talking about. Remember, this was our second full week of school.

• Study 7 spelling words for weekly spelling test (each Friday). We are working our way up to 10 spelling words for weekly spelling test.  This week's words:
• mom
• hot
• hop
• pot
• pop
• ox
• lock
• Read "The Big Blue Ox" pgs 56-71 in reading book & Study High Frequency Words pgs 54-55. There will be a Comprehension Test and High Frequency Word test each Friday.
• Parents to sign and date RAH-RAH (Read At Home) note each week. Counts as homework and is due each Friday. Indicates that student has practiced 15 minutes on sight words and in the reading book on the dates listed - minimum 4 days per week.
• Study number, color and kindergarten words. Test September 8-12
• MATH - write numbers 0-30
  Recognize numbers to 30
  Count to 30 (forward, backward, skip counting by 2, 5 and 10)
• Complete Math Practice Pages (8 pages of written work) due Friday
• Writing - Read pages 72-73 in reading book & complete page 73 on a separate sheet. Due Friday.

When Gabriel was in Kindergarten, we would sit down on Sunday (sometimes Friday) evening and knock out the homework for the week. We tried that last week with the first grade homework and spent 90 minutes working on it and didn't get it finished. WOW. This week, we will spend a little time each evening knocking this out. WHEW!

Now for a little humor. I was reviewing the kids' paperwork for the day and G had some worksheets on patriotic themes. One of them included the Pledge of Allegiance. He learned the Pledge in daycare a while back but I asked him if he could recite it. He said, "Yes, Mommy.  I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands one nation, under God ,with invisibility and justice for all."

Twilight Zone Moment

I just noticed that my last post (prior to today's) was on March 15th and it says that I plan on blogging again. Funny story. I found "the lump" that day. How's THAT for foreshadowing.  Cue the music!

Not everything in our life is cancer related

I think it's about time we get back to the fun stuff on this blog. Let's talk about life, kids, work, family, and my new outlook on life and priorities. We can talk birthday parties, Pinterest projects....there's so much more to talk about than cancer and treatment...don't you think?  We can include more laughs here too...wait, is that even possible?  Well, we are going to try.
Once again I've decided that most of our Facebook friends couldn't care less about the playhouse or any of that stuff so if you ARE interested, you can come here and find out all of the mundane details about life @ The LD and all of the fun things we try to do.

Where have you been?!

There is NO way that my last post was in March. How is that even possible? That's just crazy and it must stop! Wait...my kids want to play cards so I'll be back later.  Priorities, people.  ;-)

I like her message because it takes into consideration those of us who do not feel like victims - we are aware that, in some cases, we hold our selves back. That we carry guilt when we shouldn't and that we sometimes don't have enough faith in ourselves. We can be anything we CHOOSE to be - whether that's a work at home mom or a CEO...or president!
I've been called bossy before...I've called my daughter bossy more than once. What's that about?!  lol
